Sheila Waye

Welsh Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Neath

Sheila Waye

Sheila Waye is a businesswoman and carer who lives in Pontardawe.

She is an experienced foster carer, committed to raising standards of care in families and in the public sector.

For the past 20 years she has been involved in all aspects of care, including direct fostering of children and teenagers, many of whom were otherwise beyond control, placed in her care following sex abuse or family drug problems.

For four years she was joint owner of an independent fostering agency and special needs school which required close partnership working with officers of all levels within the Education, Health and Social Services departments of the local authority.

Throughout her caring career Sheila has kept up to date through relevant training. This has included gaining direct caring skills and qualifications covering such topics as HIV/AIDS, drug abuse, sexual abuse, adolescence, aggression and violence. Since 1988 she has contributed to the training of Carers and Social Work Professionals as a Core Trainer for West Glamorgan Social Services and visiting lecturer at Llanelli and Afan Colleges.

Sheila is involved in representing other carers in coordinating bodies.

Prior to becoming a carer, Sheila's early career was as a hairdresser. After completing an

apprenticeship and obtaining A.B.H. Advanced studies in Hair & Beauty Therapy Diploma, she gained salon experience. For 20 years she was self employed, having set up and run her own hair and beauty salons employing staff from various cultural backgrounds.

Currently she is a stress management consultant and relaxation therapist, working through her own company, Thought Field Therapy Wales (www.thoughtfieldtherapywales.com).

Sheila has found time to play a full part in local social and business organisations.

Her main interests are: complementary therapies, reading, politics, watching ballet and listening to all kinds of music.

Neath candidate Sheila Waye says:

"I am committed to using my life and care skills and experiences to enhance the understanding between providers of direct care and the Health and Social Services professionals.

"I also want to see the carers on the ground backed up by the administrations in the Civic Centre and in Cardiff Bay. Young people need discipline, and goals in their lives, as well as understanding. Too often the necessary steps are not taken because of excessive bureaucracy.
